White Roofs
Yes, we’ve got Minnesota’s first rooftop farm, and we’re pretty darn proud of it. We spent almost six months trying to make a traditional green roof work before throwing in the towel and growing heirloom tomatoes for Lucia. But when we started looking at ways to reroof some of our other assets that couldn’t accommodate either system, we turned white. No, we were fine, we turned the roofs white. Just like brothers Mike and Patrick McCarney, who started Colorado based Akomplice. Our fellow innovators’ latest mission is to start looking at white in a completely different light (puns aside). They got together with Fred Segal to produce a paint kit that helps support the Paint Project—an organization that aims to paint roofs around the world white, reflecting the suns rays, keeping houses cooler and thus reducing cooling costs to help slow global warming.
U.S. Secretary of Energy Steve Chu explains, “Making roads and roofs a paler color could have the equivalent effects of taking every car in the world off the road for 11 years.” A Paint Pack wont just get you a great starter kit, but additionally 10% of the paint pack profits will benefit the White Roof Alliance.
If you go to the AK Store, you can pick up your own Paint Pack for $49 which includes a limited edition t-shirt, an Akomplice x Conveyor Fred Segal paintbrush and a hand-numbered certificate of authenticity.
