Sustainability

One step ahead

We were “going green” and reducing our “carbon footprint” years before it was the “in” thing to do. In 2008, we formed our internal Sustainability Leadership Team and now every day we’re hopping on our bikes, changing our ways and reducing the impact we have on the environment.

Protecting & Sustaining

  • Developed Minnesota’s first rooftop farm, Cornerstone Rooftop Farms, LLC
  • Choose sustainable building materials and interior finishes in all building projects
  • Use drought-resistant, native plantings and gray water irrigation techniques whenever possible
  • Eliminated pesticide use for landscaping efforts
  • Use sustainable snow removal and winter maintenance
  • Use green cleaning products and practices at all buildings

Conserving Energy

  • Achieved carbon neutrality in 2009 through energy efficiency and conservation efforts, and the purchase of carbon offsets through TerraPass
  • Purchased carbon offsets, funding initiatives including a nature conservancy and a buffalo herd with Belwin Conservancy- projected 2010-11
  • Completed lighting retrofits, changed desktop power management settings and installed occupancy sensors and operable, Energy Star windows to decrease electrical consumption
  • Installed low-flow fixtures (sink, toilet and urinal) in our office (Eco- Blue Cubes)
  • Implemented results of energy audits at all company and partner buildings

Reducing Waste

  • Using co-mingled recycling for paper, plastic, glass and aluminum
  • Implementing food-to-hog waste management program at tenant restaurant locations
  • Providing ongoing operational improvements to reduce energy use and related greenhouse gas emissions
